Eucalyptus oil - General: We are very familiar with the image of the koala bear sitting on a branch, eating quantities of eucalyptus leaves that would be highly toxic to other mammals or humans. The fast-growing tree, which can grow up to 100 metres tall, is native to Australia, and the Aborigines distinguish between several hundred different species. The best known are the varieties "globulus", "radiata" and "citriodora". Eucalyptus radiata is milder than globulus and smells fresher, almost a little lemony. The pungent, camphoraceous-smelling eucalyptus oil is mainly used in flu remedies and helps to repel bugs and insects. We also know the flavour from cough sweets, the smell of sauna infusions or cold baths. The "globulus" variety contains significantly more monoterpenes than the "radiata" variety, which in turn contains more monoterpenols, making "radiata" gentler and more skin-friendly, which is why this oil can also be used on children.

Eucalyptus oil - physical effect:
The main active ingredient in eucalyptus oil is cineole (formerly also known as eucalyptol), which accounts for 60-80% of pure oil. Due to its strong effect, eucalyptus is successfully nebulised in the room, especially in times of colds and the like. Gentle application in an ultrasonic nebuliser is ideal here to ensure that the full effect is retained. The essential oil increases concentration, revitalises and stimulates. Due to its pungency, eucalyptus oil should only be used with caution on children, and if it is used, then only in small doses and highly diluted (with vegetable base oil), but the "radiata" variety is better than "globulus".
Eucalyptus oil - Mental effects:
Thanks to its uplifting, stimulating effect, the oil also helps us in times of emotional depression. Smelling eucalyptus oil improves our concentration, focusses the mind and sharpens the intellect. When diffused, eucalyptus not only cleanses the air of bad odours or pathogens, it also purifies the mind.
Eucalyptus oil - practical tip: If you feel mentally tired or drowsy, mix 1 drop each of eucalyptus, lavender, lemon and peppermint oil and smell it or massage it into the back of the neck (be careful with the temples/eyes because of the sharpness!!). This has a stimulating, concentration-enhancing, cooling effect and cheers us up again. The same mixture of 2 drops in a spray bottle (preferably glass) shaken well with 1/4 litre of water is a very effective means of scaring away aphids and other pests.

Eucalyptus oil - Instructions for use: Due to its strong effect, eucalyptus oil is not suitable for small children or asthmatics! Do not use if you suffer from high blood pressure or epilepsy! Otherwise only work with dilutions if possible. Too much eucalyptus oil in the air irritates the eyes! Internal use only after consulting a doctor. Eucalyptus can impair the effect of homeopathic remedies.
